Completion of Zanzibar Projects

Greetings Family and Friends:

We are now back at our hotel in Dar es Salaam. Our time on the island of Zanzibar has come to a close, and we spent part of the day viewing some of the sights before our 2+ hour ferry ride back to the mainland of Tanzania. The time on Zanzibar was amazing, and the team is still absorbing the events of the past week.

Update on the projects:

Medical: Supplied medicine for 600+ patients at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital. Doug Miller was invited by Dr. Ikongo to visit a near by village clinic to assess equipment and patient needs for a future medical mission next year.

Press Conferences
: Headlines were made in the local paper after press conferences were held on live TV throughout Tanzania. Kathy represented Crossroads along with Bishop Mgullu and Doug-em as medicines for the Mnazi Mmoja Government Hospital, wheelchairs for the disabled and Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts for the government orphanage were presented to grateful officials from the the Chief Ministers Office and the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. Kathy received a Certificate of Appreciation for Humanitarian Assistance on behalf of Crossroads Bible Church as did Bishop Mgullu on behalf of Christian Mission Fellowship.

Construction: Efforts continued on the new feeding center building for the orphans. Footings were dug and concrete was poured in preparation for the setting of the blocks. These blocks are part of the building foundation. The team had to improvise in making some tools to complete the construction tasks. All of the water required for the mixing of the concrete was drawn from the village well, bucket by bucket, and carried over 300 feet. We worked side-by-side with the local day laborers, many of these were Muslim. We had the opportunity to share our faith with them. We took many photos and made many new friends and hopefully planted a lot of seeds.

VBS: Nearby, VBS attracted over 111 children. We gave the children new shirts (sewn by CBC women) and new shoes (a gift from our team member, Martha). This created much fanfare! The children loved playing games, singing songs, and listening to Bible stories. We made many new friends and at the end of the week, it was difficult to say good-bye.

In addition, the team had the opportunity to hold Women's Health classes for the local village women and also provide a water purification kit to the church planter. Both were well received and will hopefully increase the health and preventative care for the local people.

Today we received a private tour of the island's beaches and wildlife with the government officials of Zanzibar. The resorts on the island were a sharp contrast in comparison to the living condition of the local people. The beaches are really beautiful and we enjoyed seeing the monkeys at the park face-to-face!

TMI...TMI!!! YIKES...

The remaining project to accomplish in Dar es Salaam is the setting up of the computer lab at Bishop Mgullu's church. We will be working on that at 6:30AM tomorrow morning (so we need to get to sleep!). We plan to have 6 computers set up with internet access and the remaining 6 computers used for computer learning classes.

Thank you for the comments. It is wonderful to hear from all of you. When time permits, we will obtain photos from all of the team members to post on the blog. Unfortunately the speed of our connection is very (very) slow, so it takes a while to upload photos. We will try to add as many as possible, time permitting. Overall, the health of the team has remained strong and morale has been high as we do our best to stay flexible to "African Time". The people here have been amazing and will never be forgotten. Thank you for your prayers and continued support!

HI MoMo,
I kept the phone right by my bed, but by the time I got it this morning, it had already gone to the message machine. The pictures are just beautiful!! May I say again how proud I am of you and Amy. To be that young and contributing so much in the world is beyond commendable! When I was that age I was...well, never mind what I was doing at that age!
Anyway, yesterday I went to celebrate Bill Kelly's engagement party in a town called Hercules. It was alot of fun. I got on his computer and showed him pictures of your trip as I do with my friends at work every day whether they like it or not!
I miss you and am going to have you r favorite foods when you come home. I will try to make it other than the microwavable variety and use my extraordinary cooking skills!
Love to you, Amy and the team.

Alright, mom told me you had written something up here. If this is true, I cannot locate it. I saw the pictures though, it looks like an awesome trip. Jenna says hi. Anyways, come home safe, and I know you brought an unnecessary amount of money, so I would like a present when you come home. I think a pet tiger will do quite nicely. Jenna would like an albino rhino. I do not want to hear any excuses either mimi. Tiger or Bust!!! Anyway, again, come home safe. -Joe, Jenna

Hi Sweet Amy,
It is Sunday morning so you guys are probably almost ready to call it a day there. You look beautiful as always in your picture. Keep up the good work! I'm sure you are seeing things that only you and the team will ever really get the full impact of. (Don't tell Mimi I ended a sentence in a preposition!) I'm guessing that when you get back, no explanation of what you have really seen and done would do it justice. I can't wait to see you and Mimi and referee the slapping wars which I'm guessing will resume shortly upon your return.
See you soon.
Norah

Great that the computer lab is up and running! So now it sounds like all your work is done and you get to enjoy some amazing sightseeing with the knowledge that God will do great things with the impact you have made on people's lives. Thanks for the MySpace note Karyn - so good to hear a teeny bit of your experience. Can't wait to see you and hear it all. Caper says he misses you and to watch out for pumas on safari. (He doesn't care if there really are pumas in Africa - he wants you to be careful anyway 'cause he is mostly afraid of pumas - Dolce too). I tell him everyday that you love him and miss him.

Have a great last few days there and I hope you have blissfully uneventful travel on the way home!

Love you!!
Mom (& Dad too)

Dear Amy,

We got your email and your voice mail too. We were at church when you called. Most mission trips seem to center around the virtue of patience. We will continue to pray for flights, luggage, vans, cars, etc. We will see you Sunday at SFO. Can't wait to hear all about your adventure!!

Ben left this morning for Hume Lake, so it's just dad and I for the week; should be pretty quiet around here!

I am so proud of you and miss you loads! Say hi to Mimi for us!

Love,
Mom (and Dad too!)

I love the blog. But, I haven't seen any pictures of you. I am glad that you are in the fun portion of your trip. I looked up Arshua on the internet and it lookd beautiful. It was at least nice seeing the picture of the operating room, I least knew you took the picture. I am sure you guys are encouraged by all the comments you have been getting. Tell Kathy she did a great job, since I personally know how much work is involved. By the way, I did you get you email from the new computers you guys put in. I am going to tell Bob that we should put up a blog for Sierra Leone.

Can't wait to talk to you...

Not sure where to post this but I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of National Clicks?

Can someone help me find it?

Overheard some co-workers talking about it all week but didn't have time to ask so I thought I would post it here to see if someone could help me out.

Seems to be getting alot of buzz right now.

Thanks
